A friend told me she kept hearing the phrase “Who do you think you are?” during her prayer time. She said, “I know it’s just the enemy trying to tear me down.” But to me, that totally sounded like God trying to build her up. Hear me out.
.
For those of us who think it’s our job to fix everything, to make everyone happy, to juggle all the balls and spinning plates… is this not a tremendously comforting phrase to hear? Who do we think we are?
.
Isn’t this where our worry and stress come from? Trying to control things, trying to do and be more than God is requiring of us in that moment. Trying to influence people who aren’t listening, trying to predict how things will go and avoid negative outcomes. Trying to avoid pain for ourselves or those we love. Who do we think we are?
.
{Who do you think you are? This is not your responsibility. I am God. I am handling this. I know you don’t like how it’s playing out right this second. But I have a plan. Trust Me. You can rest.}
.
Because, geez, don’t we all need more rest? If not actual sleep, just mental, emotional, spiritual REST. A moment of freedom for our exhausted brains. A split second where the balls and plates pause.
.
It takes humility to step back from #allthethings we’re convinced desperately need us to keep spinning, to step back and let God be God. But He commands us to not worry. Says He hasn’t given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. Who are we to disobey?
.
So next time I’m stressed out and worrying over people I love, or things I can’t control, or stuff that I’ve screwed up, please ask me…
.
Who do you think you are?
